Middle School Math Roundup

Middleschool math roundup!

These are the resources we’ve been using, and will continue to use, for our middle school years. One thing I always look for in mathematics curriculum is that it builds on concepts, doesn’t jump around, and that it is hands on.

  • Daily Mental Math: I added Daily Mental Math by Hana from @pepperandpine this winter and it has been a favourite so we’ll use it again this year. It is a HUGE collection of questions and we only do math three days a week so there are lots of questions still to do!
  • Key To Math series: I love this series and have used it with both of my children for about two years now. It is so practical, provides lots of repetition, moves slowly (but you can skip ahead if you have a faster learner) and very hands on. It is a favourite so we will continue to use the topics they have to offer.
  • JUMP Math: We have always used JUMP as practice questions because they have so many and you can tear out the pages you want to work on. I’ll be using it for word problems this year. A girl can only create so many practical word problems before she needs a little back-up!
  • Hands-On-Equations: Moving into highschool math we are using Hands On Equations to help make algebra make sense. A friend introduced it to me and it was like a lightbulb went off in my own head so at least I know I’ll have some confidence teaching algebra now.
  • Khan Academy: My son wanted to start using Khan Academy last year as a way to build up exposure to mainstream math and have some independence. I teach the larger concept and then he will go and do the separate unit on his own. I’m surprised at how well he was able to adapt and catch on to concepts, so if anyone tries to tell you homeschool, Waldorf inspired math isn’t rigorous enough, don’t worry! It is!
  • Your Business Math Pet Store: Simply Charlotte Mason: Advertised for a younger crowd, this fits perfectly into our math scheme with some very practical math skills in accounting and life math.

I will come back and update the post if I add anything else to the list!

Until next time,
Marina
