Colour Dynamics Update

I’ve had one week of painting from Colour Dynamics by Angela Lord and I’m excited to share my thoughts about the first week of painting with you tomorrow for #watercolourwednesday. This week has helped me to get a feel for the process used in the book and create a rhythm for working through these exercises. I wanted to share them with you so you’ll know what to expect.

Chapter one covers yellow, blue, red, green, orange and purple. Each colour starts with three exercises to experience the colour, followed by reflection, and then an invitation to create paintings using that colour with some suggested techniques.

I will be breaking each colour into two weeks. The first week will be spent experiencing the colour, and the second week will be free painting with the colour.

I’d like to preface all the paintings I share with a reminder that I’m a novice. This is a VERY pretty book. It appeals to the desire many of us have to be able to create beautiful paintings with such appealing colours, contrasts and movement. Colour Dynamics’ high “pretty count” is one of the reasons I bought the book. I’ll be the first to admit that packaging works and I TOTALLY judge books by their cover, ha ha. It makes a great coffee table book, it feels good just to flip through it.

That said, the bar does feel a bit high. And this isn’t me being coy or self depreciating. I know where my skills lie, and I’m really interested to see if this book can help me expand my abilities! But I’m also realistic, and I’m hoping you all will be too. What I share will be the paintings of a beginner, because the sole purpose of this adventure is to see if the average beginner could find this book helpful.

We shall see!

Warmly,
Marina
