This week is all about reading through, from cover to cover, and collecting materials. Money for supplies has been pretty much spent for the year, so I don’t have room to buy many supplies. Luckily, there aren’t many needed.
The introduction states: “This books is designed to take you on a step-by-step journey, opening a door to fresh, vital colour experiences and offering an experimental approach to water colour painting… Designed for beginners and students as well as teachers, therapists and artists, the book is structured in sections to guide you systematically, chapter by chapter, through a progressive sequence.”
So, already, after my first read through, I can see that her idea of a step by step journey is very different than my idea of step by step 😬🤪. I think this books leans heavily on building understanding through experience, and the steps are purposefully light so as not to become too pedantic and overbearing. Essentially I think she wants us to muck about with the paints to gain a feeling for colour within ourselves. I see that for that to happen, the steps have to guide and not dictate. As a person who enjoys taking adventures that are clearly laid out and planned (and therefore probably not as much as an adventure as a road map!), I can see this will be something I will need to lean into with an open heart and graciousness of spirit.
One thing I love is that a set of aims starts each chapter. I think it is a wonderful way to set intentions.

I start painting tomorrow and I’m going to move slowly (as is suggested in the book!) so we’ll see how far I get.
I’m excited! To make these posts easier to find I will be tagging them with watercolourwednesday and placing them all under the category of painting. Both tags and categories can be found on the right side panel of the blog.
Warmly,
Marina
