Our family joined forces with a few familiar and new families to create a Steiner inspired handwork co-op. With 12 families of all different handwork abilities, we parents decided to start with weaving as the theme and let each child choose where they wanted to go with the task.
We made a simple looms out of cardboard. A rectangular one for my son, who is making a placemat and a round one for my daughter who made this wall ornament. One of the reasons we chose weaving is because it is one craft that can be done without spending a penny! We used scraps of wool/yarn and fabric we had at home and who doesn’t have carboard somewhere in the house? It makes the group accessible, and that was really important to the group.
My children couldn’t wait to get through main lesson this morning so they could get back to their weaving! Handwork is something that gets grumbles in this house, so this is a welcome change. Working beside peers really makes a difference. It’s our own version of a quilting circle!
