Second Grade Book Stack

The discussion about books for newly independent readers has come up a lot in my social circles lately, so I thought I’d share some of the books my 8.5 year old daughter is reading.

I do want to add, my daughter LOVES to read picture books, and while everyone pushes for chapter books at this age, I encourage practicing with books she loves no matter their level. I’ve pictured chapter books because that is what parents have been asking about.

Not pictured are a few books we don’t currently own or have out of the library:
Bink and Gollie by Kate DiCamillo,
ABC Mysteries series,
Piggie and Elephant books by Mo Willams,
Magic Treehouse Series

I don’t believe in “twaddle”, and feel that any age appropriate book that gets children to love reading is a good book! Just as I don’t always read books to push my intellectual or literary limits (I love a good sweet romance book!), I don’t expect that of my children either. The only thing I watch for is appropriateness and that the characters display kindness and quality of character.
