With my background in Early Childhood Education, I’m always up for a little verse to help us through the day and fingerplays to add some fun. Both my children are beyond fingerplays right now, but these were some of their favourites when they were wee ones. I HAVE included two fun riddles that I placed on the table for April Fools this year so the big kids aren’t excluded in all the fun!
A little seed for me to sow, (hold hands cupped together as if holding the seed)
A little earth to make it grow. (cover one palm with the other)
A little hole, a little pat, (poke finger on open palm, drop seed in and pat the soil over)
A little wish, and that is that. (cup hands together as if holding a ball between palms and pinch eyes closed and open them for “and that is that”)
A little sun, a little shower, (span arms in arc like the horizon, sprinkle fingers like the rain)
A little while, and then a flower. (fold hand in lap, have arm with fingers spread grow up like a flower)
The Little Plant: Kate Louise Brown from A Child’s Seasonal Treasury
In the heart of a seed buried deep so deep, (Crouch down all balled up like a seed underground)
A dear little plant lay fast asleep. (Place head on hands like a pillow, eyes closed)
“Wake!” said the Sun “And creep to the light!” (Open eyes and look around surprised)
“Wake” said the voice of the raindrops bright. (put hand to ear as if listening)
And the little plant heard and rose up to see, (Rise slowly, stretching arms upward)
What the wonderful outside world might be. (stand on tiptoes all stretched out and turn in place)
Riddle Me This!
Older children love riddles so much! See if they can figure out the answers 🙂
In Spring I am dressed
Decked out in my best.
In summer more clothing I wear;
When cold it grows,
I fling off my clothes,
And in winter quite naked appear.
What am I?
(Answer: TREE)
What flowers can be found between the nose and your chin? (Answer: TULIPS)
What goes up with the rain comes down? (Answer: An Umbrella)
Until next time,
Marina
